Please use this format when reporting oil consumption.

2011 is burning a lot of oil (Premium- non turbo). It's going into the dealer but he told me the owners manual states that 1 quart every 1, 200 is "acceptable." Are they trying to cover themselves by putting it in print? I didn't even get the manual until after purchase. I think it is burning more than that but even 1 quart every 1, 200 under light driving conditions (no excessive weight and no towing) is clearly not acceptable. Why should a brand new engine, now with about 10k on the clock be burning about a quart a month- minimum. So according to their math, if I can go 7k between oil changes, I will have had to add about 7-9 quarts or oil before I even do my oil change? This makes no sense and gets costly fast since it requires full synthetic 0w20. I can only imagine this issue will get worse as the engine gets older too. This is not what I expected from a new vehicle. You buy a new vehicle to avoid these issues. I have another 10 year old vehicle (not a subaru) that has never burned a drop.

Has anyone else in here been burning this much oil- about 1 quart or more every few week- or about every 1, 000. What can I do to address this with Subaru directly if the dealer tells me it is within the acceptable range. Have there been any recalls on the '11's to address this issue? I was not told about this issue prior to buying the vehicle. I don't even think it's good for the environment to be putting a quart of oil into the air every few weeks. Many cars can go 5-7k without burning a drop of oil. Is it just this Forester or are all the 2011's with the new motor burning at such a high rate.

Well, it was overfilled when I took delivery. Way over the line.

4.5 quarts back in took it slightly over the full line, so this guy might take a bit less?
I've just today picked up my car 2010 X-Premium from my local dealer in So. Maine for work regarding this bulletin 02-115-11R listed above. I had reported the exact symptoms to the service crew. Sure enough my vehicle ID info matched within the listed range.

My dealer is top notch in my humble opinion, and took fast action to get my car repaired, including a free loaner vehicle while in shop. On my 30 minute drive home it was noticeably much more powerful, and I'm optimistic everything will be fine, but something just doesn't sit right with me now.

Has anyone had this same service done and how are things with the vehicle since? I'm right under 30k for mileage and if they were to offer me what I owe on the car in trade to get into a 2012, I would probably be pretty inclined to make the move.

Thanks for any help with regard to this issue.

The oil consumption of our 2011 Forester Premium has gone down to ~ 0.5 quart in about 4k miles after the short block of our car's engine was replaced under warranty. Also, our car's oil consumption seems to go up when the weather gets really hot (this may be partly due to the 0W20 synthetic oil). I still think this oil consumption is unacceptable for a new car, but our Subaru service people seem to suggest that it is 'OK' now. Perhaps I did not know that Subarus are expected to consume some engine oil from the very beginning. One 'remedy' I have been implementing in very hot weather in the Midwest is my use of our 1995 850 turbo sedan volvo (with more than 200k miles in our hands) that still consumes no oil after almost 18 years.

Certainly, our Subaru has been great in wintry weather and we really enjoy it. It is also great in Fall and Spring weather. Its fuel efficiency seems to suffer significantly when the A/C is turned on, but I still manage to always get better than 20 MPG with every fill-up in Chicago driving year-round (ours is a manual).

2011 Forester Premium, manual, 21k miles
1995 850 Turbo Sedan Volvo, 200k+ miles (still a great car)
2006 2.5T S60 Volvo, 46k miles (my other half loves it)

I just finished my oil consumption test. The results are:
- The first 1000 miles burned no oil
- the second 1000 miles burned 1/4 quart
- the third 1500 miles burn no oil
- last 1000 miles burned 3/4 qt of oil.

No change in driving habits. Am I stupid or the tech is very smart. I don't have to explain and you guys know that it was overfilled and the dealer marked it as full. Indeed that I noticed they overfilled the oil, but I was so stupid to think that they would marked it above the full line. The SOA didn't believe me that when I told them it was overfilled.

Forester Burns Oil

My wife has a 2011 Forester 5spd. manual that burns more oil than any car I have ever seen. I have owned Subarus my whole life and I feel bad for talking her into getting her Forester last year. Why bother changing the oil when you are adding a fresh quart less than every 1,000 miles. Even worse is the price of the oil it uses (over 6 bucks per quart). I tried changing wieghts but it ruined the gas mileage. Every time we take a trip we have to babysit the oil level. There is no indicator gauge or light that I have seen to let you know it needs oil.
2011 Forester

I have a 2011 Forester that I bought new. Followed the manual directions for break-in. I had the oil changed before the recommended miles. After the first couple of oil changes it began to use a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I took it to the dealer and they told me that is perfectly normal. I went to another dealer and the said you need to do an oil consumption test. I drove 1200 miles went to the dealer and they checked the oil (which I had to do 4 times) and every time it was down a quart of oil. Then they said we need to do a compression test. It was below but still considered in the acceptable range so I was told again this is perfectly normal - no service required. They told me if I wasn't happy about it to contact Subaru Corporate. Corporate said your compression test was normal and it's in the owners manual that it's normal to use a quart of oil every 1200 miles. Who reads the owners manuel BEFORE they buy a car? If I would have known this before I bought the car I wouldn't have purchased a Subaru.

Just hit 5000 miles on this oil fill. Has used just under half a quart. Not bad but I know if I took it on the 900 mile road trip we sometimes take, it would use at least that amount in 900 miles. Oil is getting darker but not black. I just took my 2000 Sierra with 98K miles on a 3500 mile round trip and the oil level barely moved and the oil still looks new.

I think I'll drain some out now and send it to Blackstone. Will report back. Car running good otherwise besides the annoying cold start up knock and oil light that flickers or stays on for the second or two that it's knocking. :icon_rolleyes:
Another 2011 Forester using oil

My 2011 forester is using 1 quart every 2100 miles and the dealer did a engine oil consumption test. Lets get something straight here! Any new engine should NOT CONSUME OIL AT THIS RATE! Obviously Subaru messed up on quality. If I had to guess it is probably a head problem, Valve guides or something. The claim was put in with subaru and they will be FIXING THIS!

Call the Subaru customer complaint line and tell them you are not satisfied with a new vehicle using oil. I know other people with 2011 foresters that use almost no oil in 7000 miles. The owners manual oil consumption wording is a copout on an engineering problem that never got fixed!

It is Subarus reputation at stake to acknowledge the problem and just fix it!
People do not like being brushed off with BS!

Good Luck

Oil Use

My 2005 137K miles uses a qt evry 600 miles but with a rebuild at $2,000 thats a lot of oil I can buy
An update of sorts on my oil consumption...
Have been struggling to get the dealer to take it seriously, especially now we don't drive much and it is a low km car. It is now under a consumption test and is is using about between 500 to 1000 MLS of oil per 1000k which after a driving holiday we were able to clock up in a week. Still have 2 annoying and time consuming revisits to dealer to go. Completely unsure and uninformed of what the outcome will be either, but I still feel the oil consumption is easy too high...

Cheers
Jacob
My 12' has used a bit of oil in the first 2k miles. The dealer said they have seen a few with a main seal issue. They checked mine out and told me I am still in the break-in period and it should be better after break-in.
My 2102 Forester, No turbo, has 6200 miles. First change at 3750. Has not burned a drop. I plan on changing every 5000 miles. 7500 mile changes seem a little to long for me. Good luck.
Excessive Oil Consumption?

Hi all,

My search-fu is weak, but I did find a couple of threads that seem to indicate that oil consumption in the new Fozzies is not unheard of. So, I come here in search of opinions.

The patient: 2011, base-model, non-turbo, 5-speed manual Fozzie.
Symptom: Excessive oil consumption. No smoke, normal power.
Usage: Gently driven highway miles. No towing. Normally driven at 65mph.

1. I had my first oil change at 4500 mi, at the dealership.
2. 2nd oil change I did myself, on schedule, (7500 mi interval) using genuine Subbie parts and their own synthetic oil. I observed the oil level to be just above the "low" mark on the dipstick. (Within the safety range). This is around 11,000 mi.
3. I'm around 3,000 miles into the next oil change interval and the oil level is halfway between the "high" and "low" marks on the dipstick.

I'm around 14,000 miles on the odometer now. I check the oil level at every other fill-up, just like the manual says (obviously, since I've observed the problem). I consider this to be excessive consumption. Is this as good as the engine is going to get, or do I still need to drive more to break the engine in?

I'm still under warranty, and the manual says to report to the dealer if oil consumption is excessive.

Is this just a fact of Subaru life? Am I not broken in yet? Is this wrong, report to the dealer right away?

Thanks.

My wife's 2012 Forester X 2.5 is burning oil since the beginning of this year. Car was bought new in November of 2011. It started burning since 4000 miles (sometime of February 2012). It now has 16000 miles and I've been just just adding and adding oil, each time thinking we forgot to put in the right amount of oil. I've done over 5 oil changes on this thing already (wow and I thought I only have to change it every 7500). I've checked and there are no leaks underneath, the oil seems to just magically disappear. I use only Subaru OEM oil filters, and Mobil 1 0w20. I think it burns more than a quart every 1000 miles. Last time I changed the oil was in May, 3000 miles later, I checked the dip stick in August and it looks like there is no oil at all (way below the minimum). I now put a 5 quart 0w20 in the trunk (which is pretty pathetic for being a new car).

It hit me when my wife brought the car into the dealer for the seat belt recall, the dealer told my wife that there is no oil and that they recommend her paying for an oil change. This is our first Subaru and it's not a right to be adding expensive 0w20 oil into such a new car. I have old Hondas/Toyotas/Chevys that never/hardly uses/loses this much oil and THEY'RE OLD! *** is going on?!

Forester burns oil

Also have a 2011 forester, 26,000 miles have checked oil twice with no oil on dip stick. They tell me that I need to check oil after 2 fills of gas. Are you kidding me brand new car and I"m supposed to check oil. Get my oil changed when I am told to. Due for a oil change in 2,500 miles checked oil and none on stick, was out of town so brought to dealer added 2 and1/4 qts. He thinks I need to see my dealer, who says this is normal. Not a fan of this car!!!!!!!!!
Another update that has little Subaru based information

Finally got through all the oil consumption visits, hard to clock up the distance at when both the mrs and I commute by public transport at the moment...

Anyway, the dealer has FINALLY agreed that the bloody car is consuming too much oil for a new car, so has "applied to Subaru of Australia" for approval of works over $2000.

No word on what that work is, and the only thing we were told is that approval can take "ehh, two or three weeks, maybe more" - next week is the third week, when I finally lose it and lodge a complaint. I haven't het as so far I have been needing to tow the line as required - e.g. consumption tests etc.

Damn unimpressed so far, but hopefully will see some progress soon, it has only been 10 months to get to this point...

Cheers
Jacob

Have a '12 with the FB25, & now over 3000 miles. Added a total of one quart of Subaru 0w-20 since new & she's holding right now between the 2 dipstick marks.
Well add me to the bucket , my 2012 is burning oil off at 1qt per 3000 miles. Dealer throws the 1200 per qt at me. My concern is that my 01 had the head gasket issue, how long will it ber before my 1qt/3000mi turns to 1qt/1000mi. This can't be good. On another note I check my oil weekly and I have noticed that at 2500miles my oil stays right at the line a week after 1qt burned. To me it seems that there is a problem with the oil. even after adding another qt right around 5500-6000 miles the same thing occurs. Really strange like the oil breaks down at that point. On another note I have noticed a coolant smell , thanks to my '01 I am familiar with that sweet sauce, and watched it go down as well to the low line , the smell stopped and it just sits at the low mark. When hot the coolant is at the hot line ..... hoping this is not a huge issue and just a summer time thing.

Excessive oil consumption on 2011 (was: ellijay)

Are you using the Subaru Genuine oil in the oil changes? If so try another oil. Some people have noticed that the 2011's are rather harsh on oil. My belief is that the 2011+ FB engines are not burning oil, but evaporating oil (there is a difference, one is bad engine, the other poor oil). Switching to an oil with a higher volatility (means less of it will evaporate) rating I bet will solve your problem.

Then again, dealerships may be stinky about you bringing in your own oil, but I personally despise the Subaru Synthetic oil after I lost a quart and half in little over 2,000 miles! Switched to the same weight of Amsoil, and 0 evaporation.
