Not a week goes by in r/selfhosted without the question arising as to what wiki is the most preferable solution to create a personal knowledge base. So to keep up with this tradition I would like to share my current setup and look forward to your thoughts and comments.

My requirements:
  • No database only markdown files

  • Option to make certain content available online

  • Beautiful and flexible UI for editing on both desktop and mobile

  • Easily sync and backup to multiple locations ( in my case icloud & nextcloud)

After a lot of testing and inspiration from you guys I ended up with the following stack and workflow:

Tech stack
  • Obsidian

  • Mkdocs Material

Additional Plugins
ToolPluginDescriptionLink
Mkdocsmkdocs-literate-navCreate the Navigation in Markdown and not via the default yaml filemkdocs-literate-nav
Mkdocsmkdocs-encryptcontent-pluginPassword protect filesmkdocs-encryptcontent-plugin
ObsidianRemotly SaveSync Obsidian with Nextcloud via webdavRemotely Save
Workflow

With Obsidian I have a gorgeous UI for all my personal note taking. While most of my content is private and only relevant to me I want to share and publish selected content to the web. This is where mkdocs and the obsidian community plugin "Remotly Save" comes into play that syncs all content to the nextcloud instance on my server. From there I mount the obsidian nextcloud folder as a volume in my mkdocs docker-compose:

Docker-compose
  mkdocs:
    <<: *common-keys-apps
    build: $DOCKERDIR/appdata/mkdocs-material/.
    container_name: mkdocs
    restart: unless-stopped
    environment:
      <<: *default-tz-puid-pgid
    volumes:
      - $DOCKERDIR/appdata/nextcloud/data/ufulu/files/Obsidian:/docs

Although I curate the navigation of my published content via the mkdocs-literate-nav plugin, content that is intened to be private ist still accessible if you manage to guess the correct url. So to be on the safe side I use the mkdocs-encryptcontent-plugin and password protect my private files by simply adding the following line at the beginning of each private markdown file:

password: supersecret
Caveats

The only thing I currently miss in the setup is the option to integrate a blog. Mkdocs-Material has a blog plugin but that is currently only available to sponsors.

What do you think and what other plugins do you guys use and find helpful?

edit: fixed link to remotely-save

Disclaimer: I am on my path to financial independence and have hit a roadblock. So posting here to get some advice. I am not FI yet.

I am 45, married with a spouse who just started earning and two kids 9 and 5. I am a Program Manager working with a large Pharma organization. I live in a HCOL area. My company has announced that 85pct of the staff will be cut and I am expected to be impacted in second half of 2023. I currently make $196k on base plus about a $100k in bonus and my spouse makes about $36k. All figures are annual. On being separated I will get 20 weeks of severance pay plus a prorating on all stock options not vested. My current situation is as follows:

  1. No debt

  2. Paid off home worth $750k

  3. 6 months emergency funds

  4. Almost $1M in retirement assets

  5. 4 months ahead on budget and trying to get to 6 months

There are multiple schools of thought about finding another job. Some are asking to wait for severance and then look while others are asking to start looking right now. I have started looking at the moment for the last one month or so and am not even getting one interview (just getting rejected on application). This is the hardest I have seen finding a job in the last 20 years that I have worked.

My monthly expenses based on take home pay adds up to $8825 which includes additional retirement savings, 529plan savings, buffer for health insurance in future, vacation savings etc. If I don't have a job, living where I am I can bring this down to $4300 a month which would not include any savings. I am looking for input on the following and would be grateful for any suggestions:

  1. 6 months Emergency savings plus 5 months severance plus 6 months ahead on current average spending of $8825 per month gets me to 17 months. If I reduced this to $4300 a month, it will stretch even further. If I add unemployment insurance it can stretch even further. Do I need to panic now?

  2. Should I be desperately looking for a position now or relax and take time to look after being let go?

  3. What should I do if I cannot find a role paying same as what I make?

  4. From a professional perspective I am a Program Manager with an MBA who is PMI certified and Scaled Agile certified and have a lot of experience in this area. The last few years have been in data management projects. To enhance my profile, I am planning on doing Amazon Cloud Practitioner certification and picking up a few data management courses on Coursera. Is there anything else I can do to enrich my profile to be picked up on Linked in or while applying to a job?

  5. What should I do for unemployment? If I get severance will I still be eligible?

  6. I have asked my wife to see whether her employer offers insurance (it's a small company). What are my health insurance options when I lose my job? Cobra seems very expensive

I know these are lot of questions and I am not expecting anyone would have an answer to all but if you do have some advise for me kindly feel free to post.

Hi guys, First of all i want to say sorry for asking probably the same question as many before did, but i have been reading dozens of threads and i could not get some answers so here i am. In the previous weeks i have became more aware of my data online. I have made steps but still l feel like i dont know enough to make the proper mesaures.

The steps i took:

I have stopped using all my social media accounts. I have been using linux (arch btw) for the prev 1 year.

I'm old timer user of firefox.

I have came across the email aliases, after a few days I have made a proton mail (with my real name, since i was not sure if it matters since i use aliases everywhere, that is still a question for me if i made a good decision. I read the privacy policy both to simplelogin and protonmail, and still not sure)

I started to use bitwarden, changed all my accounts passwords.

Started to use FOSS apps (infinity, newpipe, purpletv, feeder, antennapod).

I have read discussions about VPNs, so im not really sure about them since they can log, but i have bought PrivateVPN a year ago so I'm using it as always on both on my phone and desktop until i figure this out completly.

I'm looking forward to the pixel 8 to get graphine os.

My question is, if my goal is to maximalize privacy, but not be completely anonymous what is the proper usage of these tool?

How private are aliases, can i trust them (since they are connected to main mailbox with my real name) as much separate as a email with a random name?

I am not trying to hide my whole identity, i know its impossible. I just want to feel the comfort when I am using the internet and dont feel like im being watched.. Thank you for your responses.

Armitage is too young and casual looking. Case doesn’t look strung out and skinny enough.

Thanks for posting this, it's very good, as are the others he did. Personally I always thought Armitage would have been a generation older than the others, but maybe that's just me.

No, I think you’re right. He took part in the war which seems to have taken place quite a while ago. Then he drifted all over the world and ended in some kind of sanatorium in France, right?

That was my understanding. The guy was special forces and betrayed by his commanders and it created a massive psychotic break within him. The character we meet has been patched back together by the AI's manipulation, he's usually faking being sane and may not have any other internal personality. What I like about this one is the tunic he's wearing, since it calls out the expensive hotel suites he was staying in on the AI's expense accounts, but that was all appearance. The head is just too young and average looking. As a matter of fact he looks a lot like Case. But the other characters on the artstation site are of a much wider variety.

Are Neuromancer and the other books in the trilogy worth the read?

Yes! Read them all!

I really like Count Zero, almost more than Neuromancer.
