No dictator, no invader, can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand. - J Michael Straczynski

"You wonder what his name is, where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there in peace. War will make corpses of us all."

Here’s one I’ve been thinking about: War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.” Tolkien

I thought the same thing when I ment to Afghanistan for the Global War of Terrorism so my children may live in peace. My my children are becoming adults just in time for the next (possibly) global war. War is a fools game an adventure without reward.

My response to a sarcastic “aren’t you glad you volunteered to be president/exec dir of our synagogue/school/camp during a pandemic” is YES. Because I am able to do it and do it well and it needs doing. Not quite the same, and yet much the same. It is an honor to serve.
