Best not to play with production systems esp ones without a backup. I do not know storage spaces but hope someone can provide a tool or workaround for you. Obviously stop trying to fix just in case things get worse.

I have a backup of documents, but not the large stuff as it would be too expensive. Not the end of the world, but still annoying. After the initial shock I did some research. It might be possible that the preview versions 25099 and up support ReFS 3.9 and deduplication. Since I don’t officially have access to preview builds I have to snatch an image first.

If that works I can undo the deduplication and copy all files to new volumes. The auto upgrade makes ReFS kind of dangerous. Storage Spaces flexibility is neat though and didn’t cause any problems for me. This time I‘ll skip on the 500gb savings from deduplication though.

Great hope that works. Dedup is a pain.

Ohhhhh that's brutal... I can't believe w11 would just upgrade itself into not working like that. Well I mean I can, it's Windows... But still 😕 I always liked spaces for the flexibility but windows was just too much of a liability so I eventually gave it up.

The funny thing is: Storage Spaces is the one thing that didn’t cause any problem with this. Dedup and ReFS were the culprits (and my stupidity).

Quick update: Insider build 25951 supports all features and can access everything. Running unoptimization to revert the deduplication. The Media drive had 38% saved space, which was nice.

That sounds like good news!

If you didn't backup the data it wasn't worth keeping

No backup, no pity

Edit: Imagine being on a data hoarder subreddit and getting downvoted because you point out that having a backup is important. Embarrassing.

But I stand by it. Everyone has to learn the hard way that having backups is important. I had to, and OP just did.

Or be like me and learn from the failure of others.

That said i'm not immune as i managed to reset the modified date of all my directories yesterday when moving data and mountpoints around. Actually pulled out my backup tapes but did not have to use them. Got it fixed with this script https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/352334/484961 so its good now again.

I had a complete failure of a ReFS storage space one time from a power outage. Never again. I just stuck with Drivepool and NTFS after that.
